AI for law firms, across matters, mail and billing
A matter lives in several places at once: the file itself in Clio, the correspondence in Outlook, the documents in SharePoint, the signed agreement in DocuSign, the bill in the ledger and the next hearing in a calendar. Memtro connects to the systems a firm already runs on and answers a question about a matter from all of them, with each fact cited to the record it came from. Clio is read-only — Memtro reads the matter, the recorded time and the bills, and changes nothing in the practice management system.

Matters, clients, documents, correspondence, time and billing answered from one memory, with every fact cited to its record.
The systems these questions draw on, connected to one memory. Every connector reads by default; the tools that change something are granted by name, per team.
What it looks like today
- 01The history of a matter is spread across a mailbox, a document library and a billing system, and only the fee earner who ran it knows where.
- 02"Where are we with the Harper agreement?" takes a search in three systems and a phone call.
- 03Unbilled time and unpaid bills are reviewed at month end, from reports nobody reads in between.
- 04A new joiner on a matter reads the file for a day before they can answer a client.
- 05Time recorded late is time that was never recorded, and the gap is only found at the end of the month.
- 06Three fee earners answer the same client question three ways, because each read a different part of the file.
What Memtro does about it
One memory in front of the systems you already pay for, reading by default and acting only where an administrator has granted the tool by name.
- Connect Clio Manage and the matter, its client, its responsible fee earner, the time recorded against it and the bills raised from it are all readable in a question. Read-only: nothing in Clio is created or changed.
- Connect Outlook mail and calendar, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive, DocuSign and the ledger (Xero or QuickBooks Online), reading by default and acting where you grant it.
- Ask about a matter in plain English and the answer draws on the correspondence, the documents and the bill together, each fact cited; nothing is sent, filed or changed.
- Companies House answers questions about a counterparty's officers, filings and charges without leaving the conversation.
- Connections are granted to named teams, so a matter's mailbox and documents are visible only to the people working on it.
- Schedule jobs: envelopes awaiting signature for more than a week, bills unpaid at 30 days, hearings and deadlines in the next fortnight, posted to the team's channel.
System by system
What Memtro reads in each part of the stack, and what it may change there once the tool has been granted.
The practice management system
Clio Manage: matters with their client, responsible fee earner, practice area and stage; the time and expenses recorded against each one and whether they have been billed; bills and what is still outstanding; documents on the file, the diary and the correspondence a fee earner logged. Read-only, so a question can never move a matter or touch a ledger. Memtro speaks to Clio's EU instance by default, which is the one UK firms are on.
Mail and calendar
Outlook mail and calendar, or Gmail: the correspondence on a matter read in order, the text pulled out of attached documents, and the hearings, attendances and deadlines sitting beside it.
The document library
SharePoint and OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox: drafts, engrossments, advice and file notes, searched by what they say rather than by where somebody filed them.
Signature
DocuSign: which envelopes are out, who has signed, who has not, and how many days each has been waiting on the other side.
Billing
Xero or QuickBooks Online: bills raised, what is unpaid and at what age. Xero can raise a draft invoice, approve or void one and record a payment once those tools are granted by name.
Companies House
A counterparty's officers, filings, accounts and registered charges, answered mid-conversation rather than in another tab.
Chat
Microsoft Teams or Slack: ask from where the firm already talks, and let the scheduled deadline and signature checks post there too.

Who asks what
Partner
Asks where a matter stands before the client does: what is outstanding, who holds it, what the last letter said and what has been billed against it.
Fee earner
Picks up a file somebody else ran and gets its history in one answer, each fact cited to the email, document or invoice behind it.
Practice manager
Watches the diary and the ledger together: deadlines in the next fortnight, envelopes unsigned, bills unpaid at 30 days, matters with no movement.
New joiner
Asks the file the questions they would otherwise ask a colleague, and gets an answer that names its sources rather than a summary to take on trust.
The life of a matter
- 01
Opening
The counterparty is looked up at Companies House, and the matter's mailbox and document library are granted to the team running it, so only the people on it can read it.
- 02
Running
Questions are answered from the correspondence, the documents and the bill together. Nothing is sent, filed or changed unless somebody asked for exactly that and the tool was granted by name.
- 03
Signing
A daily job lists envelopes out for more than seven days, so chasing a signature is a line in a channel rather than something a fee earner has to remember.
- 04
Billing and closing
Bills unpaid at 30 days arrive on the first with the last chaser attached, and what was promised to the client is checked against what was actually done.
Ask it like this
Plain English, from chat, your editor, a scheduled job or your own agent. In agent mode each question also checks the other systems that know about the same people, companies and references, and the answer ends with a line per system consulted.
- Clio Manage
- Outlook Mail
- Outlook Calendar
- Microsoft Teams
- SharePoint and OneDrive
Every figure in the answer cites the record it came from, and the run ends with a line per system consulted.

Work that runs itself
A job is a prompt the agent runs on a cron schedule as its owner, with their tools and connections. Say any of these in chat and the job exists; every run's report is kept in a chat you can question.
- schedule:Every Monday 08:00: deadlines and hearings in the next 14 days by matter, with the fee earner

Questions people ask
Can it send email or file documents?+
Only where you grant the action. Outlook and Gmail can send or draft a reply when asked; actions on documents and signatures are granted the same way as they arrive, by name and per team. Nothing leaves the firm or changes a document unless a person asked for exactly that.
How is client confidentiality kept?+
Each connection is personal to one person or shared with named teams, and memory is per organisation. A matter's correspondence is visible only to the people granted that mailbox or library, and a right-to-erasure request removes a person from every store with a receipt.
Does it work with a practice management system?+
Clio Manage, yes, read-only: matters with their client and responsible fee earner, recorded time and expenses and whether they have been billed, bills and balances, documents on the file, the diary, tasks and logged correspondence. It connects with a Clio sign-in and uses Clio's EU instance by default, the one UK firms are on. No other practice management system is connected yet — for those, the mail, documents, signatures, calendar and ledger around the matter are covered, and a Postgres or SQL Server connector reaches a system that exposes a reporting database.
Does it record time?+
No. It reads time already recorded in Clio — what is on a matter, by whom, and what has not yet reached a bill — and it reads what was done from the correspondence, the documents and the attendances in the calendar, so it can tell a fee earner what a day contained. Writing the entry stays in the system the firm already uses for it.
Can it draft?+
It drafts text in a reply where the mail action has been granted, and it answers from the firm's own past matters and precedents where those sit in a document library it can read. It does not file or send anything of its own accord.
How do we know an answer is not invented?+
Each fact names the email, document, invoice or filing it came from, and an agent run ends with a line per system consulted. An answer with nothing behind it is visible as one, and a figure can be checked against its record in a click.
