AWS Athena + Memtro

Query your S3 data lake without leaving the conversation.

Connect Amazon Athena with an IAM access key and Memtro can explore the Glue catalog, explain which tables and partitions exist, and run read-only SQL over the Parquet, CSV, JSON or Iceberg data in your S3 buckets, reporting bytes scanned so you can keep an eye on cost.

What you can do with AWS Athena in Memtro

Ask in plain English from chat, your editor, a scheduled job or your own agent. The model picks the right AWS Athena tool, reads what it needs, and answers with the source cited.

01

Questions over the data lake

Ask how many events per day last week; Memtro reads the Glue catalog, writes the SQL with a partition filter, runs it and reports the bytes scanned.

02

Safe by construction

Only SELECT-style statements run, the connector cancels its own query after 25 seconds, and it never uses the server's AWS identity.

  • Lists Glue databases and tables with columns, partition keys, S3 location and format
  • Runs SELECT, WITH, SHOW, DESCRIBE and EXPLAIN only; writes, CTAS and UNLOAD are refused before they reach AWS
  • Waits up to 25 seconds and cancels its own query if it runs longer
  • Caps rows (default 100, up to 500) and reports data scanned and execution time
  • Works with any workgroup, catalog and results location
  • Uses only the credentials you provide, never the server's AWS identity

Ask it like this

Questions people ask once AWS Athena is connected. In agent mode each one also checks the other systems that know about the same people, companies or identifiers.

  • ›Which tables are in the analytics database and how are they partitioned?
  • ›How many orders did we record per day last week in the events table?
  • ›Show the top 20 customers by revenue in Q3 from the warehouse.sales table
  • ›How much data did that query scan?

Where it fits

Teams that get the most from AWS Athena in Memtro, with the rest of their stack attached.

Better together

A record in AWS Athena is rarely the whole story. Connect the systems that hold the rest and the agent cross-references them by default, then remembers what it learned so the next question starts further along.

Also in Databases and warehouses

Using something else for the same job, or both? Each connector has its own tools; connect as many as you like.

How to connect

  1. 01Create an IAM user with Athena, Glue and S3 read permissions plus write access to the query results bucket (the connector help lists the exact actions)
  2. 02Pick a workgroup; a dedicated one with a per-query scan limit is safest
  3. 03In Memtro choose AWS Athena and enter the access key, secret, region, workgroup, default database and s3:// results location; Memtro checks them by listing one database
Also works from

Chat in the dashboard, the OpenAI-compatible API, scheduled jobs, and any MCP client: Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, Claude Desktop. The AWS Athena tools are the same everywhere.

Questions

Can Memtro change anything in AWS Athena?
No. The AWS Athena connector is read-only: every tool reads, searches or lists. Nothing is created, sent, updated or deleted, and the credentials you give it should be read-only too.
Who can use a AWS Athena connection?
A personal connection serves only your own requests. A shared connection serves the organisation: everyone, or only the teams an admin chooses. Admins can always add shared connections; other members need the permission.
Does Memtro store my AWS Athena data?
Credentials are encrypted at rest. Tool results are cached briefly so agent loops do not repeat identical calls, and the facts the model extracts are saved to your organisation's memory with provenance (system, record and link) so they can be checked and superseded.
How do I connect AWS Athena?
IAM access key. Create an IAM user with Athena, Glue and S3 read permissions plus write access to the query results bucket (the connector help lists the exact actions).
